Prospective epidemiologic study of cardiovascular disease in middle-aged persons in four U.S. communities. Four examinations were given with mortality and morbidity follow up. Education and income were determined by self report.

Method/Technique

Atherosclerosis is assessed in the Study by observing lesions through ultrasound imaging. This permits assessment of (1) the association of risk factors with the underlying arterial disease, (2) the association of the same factors with clinically recognized diseases and (3) the value of ultrasound disgnosis in predicting these diseases.

Purpose

The ARIC Study is a prospective study conducted in four U.S. communities to (1) investigate the etiology and natural history of atherosclerosis, (2) investigate the etiology of clinical atherosclerotic diseases, and (3) measure variation in cardiovascular risk factors, medical care and disease by race, sex, place, and time. It includes a Cohort Component and a Community Surveillance Component.
