Description

The North Carolina Health Professions Data System (HPDS) collects and disseminates descriptive data on selected licensed health professionals in North Carolina. The HPDS is maintained by the Program on Health Workforce Research and Policy of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in collaboration with the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers Program (AHEC), and the state’s independent health professional licensing boards. Ongoing financial support is provided by the NC AHEC Program Office and the Office of the Provost at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Purpose

The North Carolina Health Professions Data System has been developed at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to collect and disseminate timely and reliable data on selected licensed health professionals in North Carolina. Descriptive data are maintained for: chiropractors; dental hygienists; dentists; licensed practical nurses; nurse practitioners registered with the NC Medical Board; optometrists; pharmacists; physical therapists; physical therapy assistants; physician assistants registered with the NC Medical Board; physicians (doctors of medicine and osteopathy); physicians in residency training; podiatrists; practicing psychologists; psychological associates; and registered nurses.

Variables

Although selected data are available beginning in 1976, continuous and equivalent data files have been maintained since 1979. For most professions these data include name, home address, business address, birth year, sex, race, information on basic professional education (i.e., school name and state, year graduated, and degree), specialty, activity status, form of employment, practice setting, total hours worked in an average week and percent time in direct patient care. For a complete listing of data for each profession, contact the Health Professions Data Coordinator.
