Sample Design
The study uses a multistage stratified random sampling of subjects' addresses taken from the registration databases of population registration offices. The first stage involved the selection of 90 sample points (selection units at municipality level). Sixty points represent the "old" (West German) and 30 points represent the "new" (East German) Federal States. Thirty-six subjects were targeted for each point to yield a large enough body of data covering the three age groups for valid statistical description and analysis.
