  National Health Expenditure Accounts

Record Type

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

Description

National Health Expenditure Accounts are comprised of the following: National Health Expenditures Historical spending measures for health care in the U.S. by type of service delivered (hospital care, physician services, nursing home care, etc.) and source of funding for those services (private health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, out-of-pocket spending, etc.). Expenditure estimates for 1960-2004 are currently available in data files or in published articles. Projections are based on the National Health Expenditures and are estimates of spending for health care in the U.S. over the next decade. Projections are presented by type of service delivered (hospital care, physician services, nursing home care, etc.) and by source of funding for those services (private health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, out-of-pocket spending, etc.). Age Estimates Personal health care (PHC) estimates by type of service and source of funding are broken out in seven age groups: 0-18, 19-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75-84, and 85 and over. These estimates can also be seen in three main age groups: Children (ages 0-18), Working-age Adults (ages 19-64), and Elderly (ages 65 and over). Simulation of personal health care spending in future years with all variables other than population distribution held constant to 1999 levels. State Health Expenditures Estimates of health care spending for 1980-2004 by type of establishment delivering care (hospitals, physicians and clinics, nursing homes, etc.) and for medical products (prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and sundries and for durable medical products such as eyeglasses and hearing aids) purchased in retail outlets. These estimates are useful in measuring health spending's role in a State's economy. These estimates should not be used to calculate estimates of spending per person in a state (see State of residence estimates) Sponsors: Business, Household and Government Health Care Spending Estimates of health care spending by sponsor: Businesses, Households and Governments. These estimates provide context for discussion of who ultimately pays for health care, the underlying pressures and the burden that affect these sponsors and their decisions to finance health care in the United States. The estimates are derived from a subset of the National Health Expenditure Accounts. NHEA Related Studies Papers related to the National Health Expenditures Accounts
