Purpose

UNICEF is committed to changing the world for children. It strives to protect their rights, improve their health, and nurture their development through sound planning and advocacy. UNICEF is also a lead UN agency for monitoring policy results, particularly the situation of children and women. To that end, UNICEF assists countries in collecting and analyzing data, helps develop methodologies and indicators, compiles and maintains global databases, and distributes and publishes statistics. UNICEF is also one of the lead agencies responsible for the global monitoring of the child-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
